Just realized my local library's ask-anything desk got way better in 3 years

Back in 2021 I stopped going because the person there would just shrug and point at a search terminal. Last Tuesday I asked about how to trace a weird property line in Portland and the librarian pulled up tax maps, old deeds, and even a 1947 survey photo in about 15 minutes. The shift happened when they started hiring folks with research backgrounds instead of just shelving experience. Has anyone else seen their local help desk level up or down after staff changes? What made the difference for you?

That bit about hiring people with research backgrounds instead of just shelving experience really rings true. It's like the whole world shifted that way, not just libraries. You see it in hardware stores where the kid who stocks paint can't tell you how to prep a wall, or at the DMV where someone who only knows the forms can't actually solve your problem. We got so used to being pointed at a terminal or told to call a number that we stopped expecting real answers. When a place actually gives staff the tools and the know-how to dig into something, it changes everything, and you suddenly realize how low the bar had gotten everywhere else.
