I messed up a roof repair on a Thursday afternoon

Was at my buddy's house in Austin last year. Tried patching a leak around the chimney with the wrong flashing. Water came through worse 3 days later. Had to tear it all out and call a roofer for $400. You ever take on a job you thought was simple and it blew up?

$400 for a roof fix is a bargain compared to what happens when water gets behind the siding and rots the sheathing. I've seen guys try to save fifty bucks and end up needing a whole deck replacement a few months down the road. Some jobs are worth paying a pro for from the start, and roof flashing is definitely one of them.

I was reading a building science blog last month that said roof flashing is one of the most common failure points in a house. They did a study on 500 homes with water damage and something like 60% of the issues traced back to flashing that was either missing or installed wrong. A $400 fix now is cheap insurance when you consider what a full wall cavity mold remediation costs.
