Can we talk about how asking 'why' changed my project results?

I was stuck on a website redesign for weeks, just making it look nice. Then I started asking 'why are we doing this?' for every single change. In one month, our bounce rate dropped from 65% to 40%. Some people think you should just follow best practices, but I think you need to question them first. Has anyone else seen a big shift after changing their approach to asking questions?

Okay but come on, a bounce rate drop just from asking why? That seems like a huge claim. How do you know it wasn't just the new design itself, or a seasonal change in traffic? I get that asking questions is good, but crediting a single new habit with such a big win feels like overselling it. Maybe you just finally fixed a broken button or something.

Wait, they had a website crash?

Honestly, you're right to be skeptical about that kind of data. Tbh, I saw something similar at my last job where a boss claimed a sales spike was all his new strategy. Ngl, we dug into it and it turned out the main competitor had a huge website crash that week, so all their customers just came to us instead. It's so easy to link two things that happen at the same time and call it a cause. Makes you question every big win you see posted online.
