That $7 cookbook my aunt insisted on actually ruined my chili recipe

My aunt Martha swore by this 1970s community cookbook from Omaha, said it had the best chili ever. I finally dug it out last month and followed the recipe exactly, and it tasted like tomato soup with dust. Has anyone else had a supposed 'classic' recipe book let you down hard?

So did you accidentally add a can of desperation instead of chili powder? My grandma had this church cookbook from 1985, recipe called for "1 can of tomato soup" and "1 tablespoon of chili powder." That's not chili, that's a sad spaghetti sauce without the pasta. I ended up dumping a whole jar of salsa and half a bottle of hot sauce just to make it edible. Some recipes should just stay in the past where they belong.

Nah man, sometimes the old stuff hits different when you just follow it as written

Used to think older recipes were always better, but a 60s meatloaf cookbook from my aunt proved me wrong real fast. That thing was a dust-covered disaster, just like your chili.
