Serious question, I had to pick between excavating a Roman mosaic or a medieval well at our site in York last month.
We chose the well and found a perfectly preserved leather shoe from the 14th century, so what would you have done in that situation?

Pick the well every single time. Roman mosaics are cool but you see pictures of them in textbooks. A leather shoe tells you how someone actually lived, how they walked around, what their day was like. That's a direct link to a real person. The well was the right call, no question.

Wait, you can see pictures of the mosaics in books? Our school just had a paragraph and a blurry black and white photo.

Oh totally, @the_mary, our textbook was the same way! The good stuff is always in the museum gift shop books, with all the close-up color photos. It makes you feel like you're right there looking at the tiny tiles.
