Made a silly comment about pottery shards at a friend's BBQ, now things are weird
My buddy had some pieces from a local dig site on display at his cookout. I joked that they looked like my kid's broken crayons. His archaeologist friend gave me a death stare, and everyone got quiet. Now my buddy says his friend thinks I don't respect the field. I just meant it as a light laugh, but it clearly bombed. How do I smooth this over without making it worse? Have you ever put your foot in your mouth about a find like this?

Oh boy, I've been in a similar spot. I once called a friend's antique quilt a fancy rag and had to backtrack fast. Honestly, just call your buddy and ask him to tell his friend you're sorry, that you now see how much care goes into preserving those pieces. Maybe even ask a genuine question about the dig site to show real interest.
