Looking back at how we used to dig test pits versus the new geophysical survey gear

We spent weeks digging random holes in a field near Bristol, but the new ground-penetrating radar unit found the whole Roman villa outline in two days. Anyone else miss the old shovel work even though the new tech is clearly better?

Miss how much you learn from the dirt itself. The new gear gives you a clean picture but you lose the feel for the soil layers and the small finds. Sometimes the old way gives you context the machines just can't see.
