Found a Roman coin in my backyard last Tuesday with a simple metal detector under $100
Everyone on this forum seems to think you need a $600 machine to find anything good, but I dug up a 3rd century bronze coin near my fence line here in Columbus after just 20 minutes of practice. I used a basic Bounty Hunter model from a pawn shop and set the sensitivity low to avoid false signals, which actually worked better than any of the high-end presets I tried. Has anyone else had luck with cheap gear, or am I just getting lucky in an old undisturbed spot?

My buddy Mike found a 1943 steel penny with a $40 radio shack detector back in high school. We were just messing around in his grandma's yard in Cincinnati after a rainstorm. The thing was barely more than a toy with a plastic coil and a knob that fell off after a week. He dug up a bottle cap first, then that penny about three inches down near an old lilac bush. Sold it for maybe 30 bucks at a local coin shop but he still brags about it at cookouts. Cheap stuff can work fine if you're willing to dig a lot of trash along the way.
