The oak on my grandfather's lot in Macon grew 14 inches of new canopy in 5 years after we stopped mowing around it
Back around 2018 my grandfather was still mowing right up to the trunk of this water oak every other weekend, and the thing looked stunted and thin, maybe 30 feet tall after 25 years in the ground. We pulled the mower back to a 6 foot circle and mulched with leaves from the same yard, nothing fancy, and by 2023 the canopy had filled in so much you could not see through it from the road. Root compaction is real, idk why it took us that long to figure it out. Anybody else seen a tree bounce back that fast once you quit running equipment over the root zone?

That "idk why it took us that long to figure it out" line is doing a lot of heavy lifting, since the poor tree spent 25 years getting its roots stomped flat every other weekend. Turns out decades of driving a mower over the same spot will do a number on a tree, who could have guessed. Better late than never, and at least the oak got its revenge by finally growing enough to block the view from the road.
