Question about a pin oak in my yard: it went from thin to full in one season, and I can't figure out why

How old is the tree and did you change anything about how you water or feed it last year? Trees don't usually flip from thin to full in one season unless something shifted underground or the roots finally got what they needed. What's the soil like around it?
