I've been cutting my climbing rope wrong for like two years

My buddy from the Portland crew saw me doing a simple end splice and just said, 'You're losing a foot of rope every time, man.' I was pulling the core out way too far before starting the bury (like 8 inches instead of 3). It clicked that's why my rope always felt a bit short. Anyone else have a basic skill they were messing up for way too long?

I kept messing up my figure eight knots for ages. I was tucking the tail back through the wrong loop, making a sloppy finish. A guy at the gym finally pointed it out after watching me fumble. It’s amazing how a tiny mistake becomes a habit you don’t even see.

But honestly those sloppy knots still hold just fine in my experience.
