Overheard a customer say her dryer was acting up after she 'painted it'

I was at the parts counter last Tuesday and this woman comes in saying her dryer stopped heating right. She mentioned she painted it to match her laundry room. I asked what paint she used and she said just regular latex from a hardware store. I had to explain that paint traps heat and can mess with the thermal cutoff. Sure enough she painted right over the vent grille too. That dryer probably cooked itself to death. Has anyone else seen this kind of DIY disaster backfire like that?

Did she paint the inside of the drum too? That sounds like a costly lesson.
