My old boss told me to stop fixing 15 year old machines and I have been chewing on it for 3 weeks
Had a sit down with the guy who trained me back in 2009, he runs a shop over in Erie now, and he told me flat out I was losing money by not telling people their 15 year old washer is done. I pushed back hard because that felt like giving up on the trade, but he pulled out his books and showed me he cleared $9,200 more in one quarter just by cutting the jobs that eat 5 hours of diag for a $60 part. What got me was when he said "you are not a repairman, you are a math problem" and I laughed but then I sat in my truck for like 20 minutes after. I have been running my own calls for 11 years and I still feel bad every time I tell somebody their machine from 2011 is not worth the $400 board. But he is right that I keep eating the loss on the ones I say yes to. So now I am stuck between being the guy who saves everything and being the guy who pays his mortgage. Any of you actually draw a hard age line on what you will touch, and if so where do you put it?
