Just realized I was using the wrong tool to check for ground faults on dryers
For years, I'd just use a basic multimeter on the continuity setting and hope for the best, which took a while and wasn't always clear. About six months ago, I saw another tech at a supply house using a clamp meter to check for current leakage on the ground wire. I tried it on a Whirlpool dryer last week that was tripping a breaker, and it showed a 2 amp leak instantly, pointing right to a frayed heating element wire. It cut my diagnosis time in half on that job. Has anyone else switched to using a clamp meter for this kind of check, or do you stick with the old method?

Ever try a wiggy for a quick check?

My old foreman called it a wiggy for years. Honestly, the proper name is a voltage tester or solenoid tester. Using slang can get confusing for new guys on the job.
