Got my $1,400 deposit back after my landlord in Columbus tried to keep it for 'wall scuffs'
I moved out of my place near Grandview 6 weeks ago and the landlord sent a list of charges that ate up my whole $1,400 deposit, including $300 just for scuffs I knew were already there. Then I remembered I had taken a walkthrough video on move in day 2 years earlier, mostly to show my mom the place, and you could clearly see every single one of those marks before I ever moved a box in. I sent him the video with a note that just said here is the condition on day one, and about 4 hours later he emailed back saying the charges were a mistake and the full check was in the mail. Now I film a slow walkthrough of every room, closet, and corner before I unpack anything. Does anyone else do this, or do you have a better way to make it stick like a time stamp or something?
Did you send the video as an actual file or just a link? Because that matters more than people realize. A link can get taken down, expire, or get edited, but a video file with the date info baked in is a lot harder to wave off. I'd also email it to yourself the day you take it so there's a stamp on it that you didn't touch after the fact. What did your lease say about normal wear and tear, because scuffs from just living there usually aren't something they can charge you for anyway.
