I used to think the 'best girl' debates were just pointless noise.
Last week, I was reading a thread about Asuka from Evangelion, and someone posted a long breakdown of her character arc from the original series to the Rebuild movies. They pointed out a specific scene in 3.0+1.0 where her actions directly mirror a choice she made in episode 22, which I had completely missed. That kind of detailed, scene-specific talk actually made me see the point of those discussions. What's a character analysis that changed how you saw a show?

But what if those callbacks ARE the character thesis? Like in Madoka Magica, when Homura's looping isn't just a plot device, but shows how her entire personality hardens each time she fails. The details build the theme.

Honestly I still find most of those deep dives a total waste of time. That Asuka example sounds like someone just connecting random dots to sound smart. I watched those movies and that scene just felt like a cool callback, not some big character thesis. Most fan analysis just overcomplicates simple storytelling to make the viewer feel clever.

My buddy Dave swore the dad in Spy x Family was just a goofy action hero. Then he read this post about how Loid's cooking scenes show he's trying to build a real family routine, not just keep his cover. Dave said it made him rewatch the whole show and it hit totally different.
