A friend's advice about pushing film ISO ruined 2 rolls of Tri-X
Buddy said to rate my Tri-X at 1600 to get more contrast in overcast light. Followed it. Got crushed shadows and grain like sandpaper. He shoots digital mostly, should've known better. Anyone else get bad film advice from people who don't develop their own?

Three rolls of HP5 bit the dust last winter after some guy at a camera meetup swore pushing to 3200 would give me that "gritty street look." Ended up with negatives so thin I could've used them as tracing paper. The irony is he was standing there with a Leica M6 loaded with Portra 160 and a hand meter. Digital shooters always talk about "latitude" like it's free lunch, but they never mention that film doesn't forgive bad advice at the dev stage. Your Tri-X at 1600 with crushed shadows sounds like a classic case of metering for highlights and letting the shadows fall off a cliff.
