Wait, What If the Whale in Free Willy Just Stayed in the Tank?
So I rewatched Free Willy on a rainy Sunday last week and it hit me, the whole ending is basically a coin flip. When I was a kid I just cried happy tears and thought Jesse was a hero for getting Willy over the wall. Now I sit there thinking about how fast that orca would've died in open water after years of being fed frozen fish by hand. Honestly a darker cut where Willy refuses to jump and just floats there while Jesse screams would've been brutal but way more real. What if the park owners actually won and put Jesse in juvie for property damage, roll credits, no whale, no sunset, just a kid in a cell. I get that movies need hope but the 1993 version skipped over how much wild stuff that whale forgot. Part of me wants a version where the brother who spray paints the glass talks Jesse out of it at the last second. Has anyone else thought about a movie where the animal saves itself without the kid, or am I weird for wanting that?
a darker cut where Willy refuses to jump and just floats there while Jesse screams" is basically just a nature documentary with extra steps. That whale spent years doing tricks for mackerel and high fives, he wasn't gonna suddenly remember how to hunt squid because a kid played him a harmonica. The brother with the spray paint was the only one in that whole movie with a working brain, honestly. Real talk, the sequel where Willy swims around confused and eats a plastic bag would've been a better life lesson than the sunset shot.
