My recent flight delay had me rewriting the end of Cast Away in my head

I was stuck at the airport for six hours (talk about boring) and started thinking about the movie Cast Away. What if, instead of returning the package at the end, he opened it? I pictured it being something totally useless to his survival back on the island, like fancy napkins or a single garden gnome. It would have been a funnier, darker punchline about pointless journeys. Anyone have a better 'what was in the box' ending idea?

Used to think the unopened box was key to the movie's message. I believed it showed how life is about the journey, not what you find. Your idea of it being pointless junk changes that for me. It makes the story a darker joke about our search for meaning. Something like a garden gnome ruins all his effort in a funny, sad way. That punchline feels more true to how random and empty things can be.

Not sure it's that deep, @simonsingh.
