Just had a thought about a different way The Mist could have ended

I watched it again last night and that bleak final scene always gets me. What if, instead of the military showing up right after, they never came at all? The main character just has to live with what he did, driving off alone into the fog. It would make the horror more about his guilt than the monsters. Has anyone else thought of a darker ending for that movie?

Probably just keep driving, maybe find a cheap motel to crash at for a night.
