Ran new keypad wire through a 1920s Chicago two-flat and it turned into a 6 hour job
Last month I picked up an install in a two-flat over in Pilsen. The owner wanted a new keypad by the back door, which should have been a 45 minute job. I figured I could fish the wire down from the attic in maybe 20 minutes. Turns out the walls were packed with old newspaper insulation from the 20s and a bunch of knob and tube wiring nobody had ever touched. I spent almost 2 hours just trying to find a clear path with my fish tape. Every hole I drilled hit a fire block or a diagonal brace. I finally gave up on the attic and ran the wire outside through the basement instead. Wound up cutting and patching drywall in two spots. Total time was 6 hours for what I quoted at an hour and a half. Has anyone else run into those old Chicago buildings where nothing is where you think it is?
