That engine shop in Tucson changed my mind about cylinder repairs

I always thought honing cylinders in-house was fine, but after watching their process with that Sunnen machine and seeing how clean the crosshatch came out, I realized I was cutting corners. Anyone else ever get humbled by a shop tour?

Wait, you sat there and watched them use a Sunnen machine and actually got a clean crosshatch out of it? I've been burned by those machines more times than I can count, so I'm honestly shocked you had a good experience. Most shops I've dealt with either don't maintain their equipment or let some kid run it who hacks the cylinder walls to hell. That's flat out amazing they got it right because I've seen more botched jobs come out of those things than I care to admit. Maybe Tucson is on to something I never expected to see.

Oh man, tell me about it. There's something about watching somebody who really knows what they're doing that just makes you stop and think. It's like that time I watched a plumber fix a leak in my kitchen - I'd been wrestling with it for hours, he shows up and does it in ten minutes with one tool I've never seen before. That whole shop tour thing really hits home because it shows how easy it is to think you've got it all figured out until you see how it's supposed to be done. It's humbling in a good way, makes you want to step up your own game instead of just getting by.
