Shoutout to the old guy who insisted on using a specific sealant for Cessna 172 flap tracks

I thought he was just set in his ways, but after a hangar in Dallas had three planes come back with leaks using the generic stuff, I switched to his recommended Pro-Seal 890B. Has anyone else found a specific brand or part number that just works better than the 'equivalent' for a common job?
