Serious question, is it ever okay to use a generic O-ring from a hardware store on a low-pressure fuel line fitting in a pinch?
I had a 1/4 inch line on a Cessna 172's primer system weeping at the annual last Friday and the choice was either ground the plane for 3 days waiting on the PMA part or use a Viton O-ring from the auto shop that matched the size and material, and I went with the shop part which has held for a week now but I'm still second-guessing the call.

Look, you're flying a plane, not fixing a lawnmower. That's the kind of "in a pinch" choice you tell your mechanic about later over a very strong drink, not the one you make and then quietly hope doesn't turn into a news story.

What if the news story is about your amazing save?
