Just got spooked by an AI voice clone of my own mom
Last week my phone rang and it was my mom's voice asking for help with a wire transfer, and I almost fell for it until she mentioned something we never talked about. Turns out scammers used a 30 second clip from her voicemail to clone her voice with one of those new AI tools. Has anyone else run into this kind of deepfake audio scam yet?

Scary stuff, but the real problem is how fast this tech is moving. Those free tools sound bad today, but they get better every month. Soon the only safe move might be a family code word for real emergencies.

Honestly, I gotta push back on this a little. You said "used a 30 second clip from her voicemail to clone her voice" and that's exactly why I think we need to be careful not to panic too much here. Tbh, those cheap AI voice cloning tools sound scary but they're still pretty easy to spot if you pay attention to weird pauses or flat tones. Ngl, I've messed around with those free voice cloners online and they sound like a robot doing a bad impression, not like a real person. I think the bigger issue is how easily we hand over our voices without thinking, like leaving voicemails or posting videos online.
