Bought a $200 phono preamp I didn't need. My old one was fine.

Upgraded my cartridge and got seduced by all the talk about external preamps on here. Spent $200 on a fancy one with all these adjustments. Hooked it up, listened for 3 weeks. Couldn't tell a difference from my built-in one on my Yamaha. Maybe my ears are shot, or maybe it's all snake oil. Returned it and ate a $40 restocking fee. Anyone else regret a gear upgrade that didn't change anything?

Same thing happened with a fancy DAC, returned it and kept the box for a year out of spite.
