My dad's note about rewinding made me check every tape I own

He wrote 'ALWAYS REWIND OR DONT BOTHER' on a sticky note and taped it to our old Panasonic VCR back in 1998, and I ignored it for years. Last month I dug out 40 tapes from my closet and half of them stop mid-movie because they were stored on the wrong side. Has anyone else found tapes that got ruined because someone never rewound them, or am I the only one with a sloppy tape family?
