That $28 audio tour in Rome was a complete waste of my time

I paid 28 bucks at the Capitoline Museums for that audio guide device and I'm still salty about it three weeks later. The thing gave me a 20 minute lecture about a statue of a hand while I stood there thinking about lunch, and half the other exhibits just had a little beep sound with no narration at all. I figured the headphones would at least work properly but the volume kept cutting in and out every time I moved to a new room. My buddy who went with me just used his phone to look up the museum's free website and honestly he got more out of it than I did. We were there for maybe two hours and I spent half that fiddling with the settings and trying to find the right numbers on the floor. Next time I'm either skipping the audio guide entirely or just reading the little wall plaques which were actually more useful. Has anyone else dropped cash on these museum gadgets and felt totally ripped off, or am I just unlucky with the ones I pick?

The Louvre one did the same thing to me, beeped at half the stuff and then gave me a 5 minute rant about a doorknob. Phone and free wifi is the move, no doubt.
