Comparing fabric softener vs vinegar on thrift store finds

I grabbed a 1970s polyester blouse from a Goodwill in Dayton last month that smelled like someone's attic had a baby with a cigarette. I washed it twice with regular detergent, still rank. Then I tried a half cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle instead of my usual fabric softener. The smell vanished and the polyester felt less greasy, plus no weird buildup on the print. Anyone else switch to vinegar for mystery stains or odors on vintage pieces?

That vinegar trick is a total lifesaver for thrift hauls.
