My uncle swore by expired ink, and I thought he was nuts

He used a 1987 bottle of India ink on a commission last week after I told him it would dry chalky, but the lines came out cleaner than my new $14 bottle. Was he just lucky, or is there something to letting pigment sit for 35 years, anyone else tried this?

My uncle used a 1972 bottle of Winsor & Newton on a map drawing last month. Same thing, smooth flow, no chalk. I think old pigment just settles into a better grind somehow. Mine from 2021 skips like a scratched CD.
