Overheard her say most marginalia in used books is just grocery lists and doodles, not hidden messages. Hit different because she showed me 3 examples from the 80s where people wrote phone numbers on recipe cards, now I read scribbles way more skeptical.

Started treating margin notes like a find at a yard sale instead of a clue. If it looks like someone was just jotting down a reminder, I skim it and move on. But the weird stuff, like a single word circled on a random page, still gets me every time. Had a used copy of a poetry book with a little drawing of a pen and arrow pointing to the spine, turned out the previous owner wrote their name there. That felt like a real find, but now I know most scribbles are just people living their lives.
