Hot take: mislabeled punk 7" is worth more than the 'fixed' version

Found a 1982 Dead Kennedys single at a flea market in Cleveland with the cover art from a totally different band, some synth-pop group. At first I thought it was a bootleg or someone's bad fake, so I almost passed on it for $8. But the runout etchings checked out on Discogs and it turned out to be a legit factory screwup from the first pressing. Now I'm wondering, do you collect these defects for the story or does it just make you paranoid about every other record you own? Has anyone else got a mislabel that turned out to be the real deal, or got burned by one that was just a scam?

My buddy once paid $60 for a "rare" misprint that turned out to be a dude's custom made sticker slapped on a regular pressing. I still give him grief about it every time we're at a record show. Your find sounds way cooler than my one and only mistake, so maybe I should start trusting those runout numbers more.

Trusting runout numbers more" is a big leap over one lucky find, @lisa820. Half the matrix codes I've looked up led me to a different pressing than what's actually in the sleeve. I'll stick with playing the record and eyeballing the label, thanks.
