Showerthought: A cafe chat in Portland gave me a fresh take on layers

I took a few days off to visit my sister in Portland last week. We were at a local cafe and I noticed the barista had amazing layered hair that moved so well. I complimented her cut, and she told me about her stylist who uses a different point cutting method for texture. I wrote down the salon name and popped in just to see their work. The stylist there was kind and spent ten minutes showing me how she holds the shears for soft layers. I practiced on a mannequin head I brought back with me. It's a small thing, but it already made my last client's haircut look more lively. I love how travel can spark these little boosts in your skills.

Heard about that point cutting method from a stylist on a podcast last month. They described using tiny, upward snips to remove weight without creating hard lines. It sounded fussy, but I guess it works if you have the patience. Cool that a cafe chat turned into a real skill upgrade.

Totally get why @nancy_kelly called it fussy but man it pays off.

That Portland cafe moment sounds like the best kind of lucky find. Nancy_kelly is right that it sounds fussy, but those tiny technique shifts are everything. It's wild how one small change in how you hold the shears can change the whole movement of the hair. Makes me want to dig out my old mannequin head and just try one new thing.
