Finally got the timing right on a 1911 after two days of fiddling

Had a customer's old Springfield that was running slow. The choice was between just swapping the recoil spring for a heavier one or also adjusting the mainspring housing angle. I went with adjusting the housing, which took about three hours of careful filing and checking. It cycles perfectly now, and the ejection pattern is way more consistent. Anyone have a better method for checking that angle without a jig?

Three hours of filing sounds like a great way to learn patience.
