My buddy says apps make rock hunting easy, but I disagree
A lot of folks in our group rely on mobile apps to identify minerals in the field. I tried a few, but they often mislabel common stones like quartz and calcite. I stick to my field guide and a hand lens because it helps me learn the texture and luster better. Sure, it takes longer, but the knowledge sticks with you.

Tried that app route too. Felt like I was just matching colors instead of learning. Went back to my old scratch test kit and guidebook, way better for actually remembering stuff.

See, I get the exact opposite feeling from apps. Swiping through colors every day on my phone actually made them stick in my head better than digging out the kit once in a while. It’s like the constant little review built the memory without me trying. Maybe it just fits how my brain works to learn by seeing stuff all the time.

Found mixing both ways worked best for me honestly.
