My $75 rock hammer purchase was the best and worst decision I ever made for my collection

It let me properly split a gorgeous piece of agate I found near Sedona, but now I can't walk past an interesting-looking rock without sizing it up for a crack, which is becoming a problem.

Stop calling it a problem and start seeing it as a new skill. That urge to size up rocks is your eye getting better, you're learning to spot potential. Before the hammer you just walked past those interesting rocks, now you actually see what they could be. The worst decision would be leaving a beautiful agate hidden inside a plain stone forever.

Ever notice how that feeling spreads to other stuff? @jesse700 is totally right about the eye getting better. I started seeing possible cutting boards in every rough piece of wood at the hardware store. My wife says I stare at trees now like I'm planning a heist. It's not a problem, it's just your brain learning to see the thing inside the thing. You can't turn it off once you start looking at the world that way.

Honestly, does that urge ever go away or do we just get better at hiding it?
