Update: My ancient tablet finally gave up the ghost after 3 years of daily abuse.
I was convinced it was a goner when it wouldn't charge last week, but a new battery from a shop in Portland and a weird trick with a hair dryer on the port got it running again, for now.

Three years in Portland and I used to be the first guy to toss gadgets at the first sign of trouble, but seeing how many people keep getting solid extra years out of old stuff changed my whole view. Getting that tablet going with just a $25 battery and a hair dryer trick really made me realize these things aren't always as dead as they seem. Now I'm the guy who actually tries fixing stuff first before shopping around.
