Found my great-aunt's 'sugarless' fruitcake recipe from 1972... what a mess
Spent $32 on special ingredients like dried persimmons and wheat germ oil to make it for the holidays. The thing came out like a brick and tasted like sweetened sawdust... my family wouldn't even try it. Anyone have a good old fruitcake recipe that people will actually eat?

My neighbor's church cookbook from 1985 has a recipe that uses real butter and orange juice. The key is soaking the dried fruit in brandy or strong tea overnight, it keeps everything moist. I made it last year and it was gone in two days, which is a miracle for fruitcake. Just skip any recipe that lists vegetable shortening or wheat germ, those are always a disaster.
