Read a study that said over 60% of DIY vinyl plank fails within 5 years, which honestly makes me question if we're too hard on homeowners trying to save cash.

I found the stat in a trade magazine survey last Tuesday, and it's got me thinking maybe our job security isn't as fragile as some guys claim when a customer wants to try it themselves first.

But that 60% fail rate, what does that even mean? Are we talking about a few loose planks in a closet, or a whole floor buckling? Most DIYers I know would just fix a small problem themselves and never call it a failure. The stat feels like it's meant to scare people. If the work was truly that bad, we'd be getting way more calls to redo entire houses, not just the tricky jobs.

Nah, I think the stat is pretty fair actually. A "fail" in this context usually means the floor didn't hold up to professional standards - so we're talking visible gaps, warping, or planks popping up, not just a loose board you can hammer back down. Most DIYers wont admit their floor is failing until it's basically unusable, theyll just live with it or patch it. If even half of those people are learning they can't do it right, that's a big reality check for anyone thinking about tackling it themselves.

Honestly, my buddy's whole kitchen floor buckled after six months.
