Pro tip: an old timer in Omaha told me I was setting my posts wrong for clay soil
He saw me digging a standard 3-foot hole and said, 'Kid, you need to go deeper and wider here, or that frost heave will push it right out in a year.' I started digging 4-foot holes with a wider bell shape at the bottom and backfilling with gravel for drainage. That was ten years ago, and those posts are still straight. Anyone else have to change their basic method for a specific soil type?
