Grandma's pie crust versus my usual store-bought

I always thought the frozen stuff was fine until I tried her handwritten recipe for the first time last Thanksgiving. The difference was the ICE WATER and lard she specified, it made the crust so flaky. Anyone have a good trick for keeping the dough cold while you work?

Wait, you used actual lard? My grandma swore by that but I always chickened out and used shortening. Does it really not taste weird? I keep my butter in the freezer and grate it into the flour with a cheese grater, it's the only way I can keep it cold enough with my warm hands. That frozen peas idea is genius though, I'm stealing that for sure.

Try resting your rolling pin in the freezer too.

That lard trick is a game changer. I keep a bag of frozen peas on the counter to rest my hands on between folds.
