Vent: My dad's construction boots don't fit my remote work life
My dad gave me his beat-up work boots when he stopped building houses. He told stories about wearing them on sites for over thirty years. Now I work from home doing computer stuff, and the boots just take up space in my closet. I feel wrong getting rid of them because they were such a big part of his life. But keeping them in a box feels sad and pointless. Does anyone have advice for what to do with a tough heirloom like this? I want to respect the history but my job is totally different now.

Rayallen is onto something with the display idea, but you could make them actually useful too. Those boots could hold something in your office, like a cool planter for a tough plant or a place to stash extra cords. That way they aren't just sitting there looking sad, they're doing a new job for your new life. It keeps your dad's story right there with you while you work. The point is to mix his history into your normal day, not hide it away.

Put them on display in your home office. I mean, those boots hold thirty years of stories, so let them breathe out in the open. Maybe it's just me, but hiding them in a closet misses the point. Clean them up a little and set them on a shelf, so they become part of your daily life instead of a sad memory. That way you honor your dad's work without living in the past.

Ever notice how we keep the most normal things to remember people by? My grandma's favorite coffee mug sits in my cabinet, and I use it for pens. My buddy has his grandpa's old hammer hanging in his garage, still dirty. We don't put these things in a box, we fit them into our own days. It turns a memory into something you live with, not something you visit.
