My mentor told me to stop over-exfoliating back in 2015, and I didn't listen

She was this amazing esthetician in Chicago who saw my routine and said, 'Beth, you're scrubbing your face like it's a dirty pan.' I was using a physical scrub every single night, convinced it was the only way to combat oil. Fast forward a year, and my barrier was so wrecked my skin would sting from just water. I had to completely rebuild my routine with her help. Anyone else have a stubborn habit they had to unlearn the hard way?

Oof, that sounds so painful. The stinging from just water is the worst feeling, like your skin is totally freaking out. I had a similar phase with those harsh acne pads, using them way too much. My face felt tight and looked weirdly shiny, but I thought that meant it was clean. Took forever to calm it back down.

My friend Jake used a pore strip every single day for a month in college. He thought it was working until his nose turned bright red and started peeling like a sunburn... it was a whole thing.
