Dropped $180 on a fancy desoldering gun last month, still grabbing my old solder wick every time.

The thing just clogs on multilayer boards no matter how careful I am, and cleaning it takes longer than just wicking the joint myself, so has anyone else found a desoldering iron that actually works on PCBs with ground planes?

Ngl I used to be all about the fancy hot air stations and thought desoldering guns were a waste compared to just wicking everything. But then I grabbed a Hakko FR-301 on sale and it kinda changed my mind. It handles multilayer boards way better than the cheap ones, just gotta keep the tips clean and use the right nozzle size. Still not perfect on big ground planes, those you almost have to preheat or use a hotter iron first. But for most joints it saves me time compared to fighting with wick that just soaks up flux and leaves solder behind.
