My sister told me my chili was watery and she was right

She came over for dinner last Sunday and took one look at my slow cooker chili and said 'you need to drain your beans.' I used to just dump everything in straight from the can including the liquid. Turns out that extra liquid makes it soupy instead of thick and hearty. Now I rinse all my canned beans before adding them. Also started using half the broth I used to and my chili comes out way better. Anyone else get feedback from family that changed how you cook?

Oh man, that bean liquid thing is a game changer... I had the exact same issue with my potato soup actually. My mom told me I was basically making potato water and I got so defensive at first but she was totally right. Now I always drain and rinse my canned potatoes too, and I even started mashing a few of them up before adding them back in to thicken it naturally. It's funny how someone just pointing out the obvious can completely change how you approach a dish you've been making wrong for years.

Mom was totally right" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, but I see it differently. Some of the best soups I've made came from leaning into that starchy canned potato water instead of dumping it.
