Finally made pulled pork that didn't turn into jerky

I've been trying to get pulled pork right in my slow cooker for about 6 months now. Last Sunday, I used a cheap 4-pound shoulder from Aldi and added a cup of root beer instead of just broth. It came out super tender and didn't dry out even after 8 hours on low. Does anyone else use soda as a secret ingredient or am I just weird?

That root beer trick is genius, I gotta try Dr Pepper next time.

Wait, wait - Dr Pepper? Like the 23 flavors Dr Pepper? I thought root beer was the only soda that worked for that trick.
