That self published sci-fi novel I grabbed for 50 cents blew my mind
Picked up a beat up paperback called 'Last Call for Ganymede' at a library sale in Akron for 50 cents. Cover looked like a kid drew it with crayons so I almost put it back. Turned out to be one of the best space operas I've ever read, tight plot and zero filler. Anyone else score a gem that looked completely trashy on the outside?

I totally get what you're saying about the pacing @shane_perry29, and I didn't mean to make it sound like it's perfect or anything. I honestly think your point about needing a good editor is fair, because there were a few spots where the dialogue got clunky for me too. But man, that scene where the protagonist has to manually pilot through the asteroid field without any backup systems, that's when it really clicked for me and I couldn't put it down. It just goes to show how different stuff hits people in totally opposite ways.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. I actually grabbed that same book from a discount bin last year and couldn't get past the first 50 pages. The pacing felt all over the place and the dialogue was pretty wooden. I know a lot of people love that rough around the edges charm but I just kept thinking about how much better it could have been with a decent editor. Glad it worked for you though, that's the fun of digging through the cheap stuff.
