Spent years judging books by their covers until a beat up copy of The Dog Stars out of a bin in Tucson forced me to stop

Found it for 50 cents at a library sale and now I grab every faded, torn spine I see because that one wrecked me in ways no shiny bestseller ever has - anyone else have a junky looking book that turned out to be a total gem?

i mean "wrecked me in ways no shiny bestseller ever has"?? come on. it was a 50 cent book from a library sale, not a religious experience. i get that finding a hidden gem feels good but lets not act like a beat up cover makes the words inside any deeper. i've read some absolute trash with torn pages and mystery stains. the dog stars is fine but i think nostalgia is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
