Guy at the thrift store checkout changed how I see old cookbooks

There was an older dude behind me in line at the Goodwill on 18th Street. He saw I had a 1974 Betty Crocker cookbook in my cart. He said "that one has the best lemon meringue recipe you'll ever try, ignore the jello salads." I almost passed it up for the glossy new one. Now I've made three pies from it and he was totally right. Anyone else get book advice from strangers that turned out solid?

Ran into a guy at a garage sale who insisted I grab a stained copy of "Joy of Cooking" from the 60s. Said the banana bread recipe would change my life. He was right, I've made five loaves this month. Now I just grab the ugly old cookbooks and trust the weirdos in line.

Used to skip old cookbooks. Now I snatch them up first. You're totally right.
