Just finished a job in a renovated 1920s bungalow in Sacramento and the old plaster was a nightmare.

The walls had this thick, crumbly horsehair plaster that made cutting new drywall to fit the uneven studs a real headache. We ended up using a lot of shims and a wider knife for the first coat to bridge some serious gaps. What's your go-to method for dealing with those super uneven old plaster walls when you're hanging new board?

Oh man, that "thick, crumbly horsehair plaster" is the worst. I feel your pain. My go-to is to just bite the bullet and shim out every single stud with a long level before I even think about hanging board. It takes forever but saves so much headache with the mud later. Trying to float those huge gaps with joint compound alone never really works right.

Bite the bullet and shim every stud" sounds about right. My method is basically just swearing a lot and hoping the mud holds.
